# AI-referred visit: definition and formula

What “AI-referred visit” means in Specoria, the formula our code uses and, where we have one, a worked example.

## Definition

A human page view whose Referer is an AI assistant’s domain (chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, claude.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com…), or, when the Referer doesn’t name one, whose utm_source does. Many apps don’t send a Referer, so this is a lower bound.

## Formula

`Referer domain first, then utm_source; from the Referer only the domain is read, from the page address only utm_source`

## How to read it

Each one is a page view by a person who came from an assistant: the Referer names an assistant’s domain, or, if the Referer is empty, missing or names another site, the address carries a utm_source that names one. The unit is a page view, not a session or a visitor.

On shared domains only the assistant’s own address counts: a visit from gemini.google.com counts, one from google.com does not.

The report splits them by assistant and by landing page, and lists AI-referred views that got a 4xx answer, for example an address that appears in an answer but doesn’t exist on your site. Each assistant’s visits are matched to its company’s bots for [Crawl-to-refer](https://specoria.com/glossary/crawl-to-refer/).

## What it does not tell you

- All of them: it is a lower bound. Many apps and privacy settings send no Referer; we count those views separately, and they can’t be attributed.
- Anything from the Referer when your log format has no Referer field: then only utm_source can be read.
- What the visitor did next: we don’t build sessions, and an access log shows no orders or revenue.
- The full Referer: we keep only which assistant it was, and from the page address only utm_source.

## What moves it

- Logging the Referer field: the combined log format has it, the common format does not.
- Fixing or redirecting addresses that AI visitors land on with an error.
- Being cited as a source in answers, which gives a person a link to follow ([Citation rate](https://specoria.com/glossary/citation-rate/)).
- Counting it from your own log with the [crawl-to-refer tool](https://specoria.com/tools/#crawl-to-refer), which runs in your browser.
