POSITIONING

An AI assistant on your site isn’t an agent-ready store

An on-site AI shopping assistant helps the shoppers who are already on your site. AI shopping agents come from outside: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and browser agents read your pages and decide whether to recommend or buy. They are different visitors with different needs. You may want both; one doesn’t replace the other.

What an on-site assistant does well

  • Answers questions about a product while the shopper is on the page.
  • Suggests products and helps compare them inside your store.
  • Hands questions it can’t answer to your support team.
  • Shows you which questions shoppers ask, which can reveal missing product information.

What it doesn’t cover

None of this is a fault of the assistant; it was built for a different job.

  • It doesn’t make your pages readable for agents arriving from outside. They read your HTML, structured data and policy pages, not your chat window.
  • Answers that only appear inside a widget are usually loaded by script, sometimes inside an iframe or a shadow DOM. Crawlers that don’t run JavaScript don’t see them, and they aren’t in your structured data.
  • It doesn’t change robots.txt or your bot protection. If those turn AI agents away, a great on-site assistant never gets the chance to help.
  • It doesn’t add prices, stock, delivery or return terms to your product data, which is what agents compare.
  • It doesn’t make checkout usable for an agent: a findable add-to-cart button, guest checkout, labelled form fields.

Already have an on-site assistant? Check these six things

  1. Put the answers to common product questions (size, material, compatibility, warranty, returns, delivery time) in the product page’s HTML as well, not only in the widget.
  2. Mark up questions and answers in structured data only when they are visible on the page.
  3. State returns, shipping and warranty in plain text and in structured data (hasMerchantReturnPolicy, shippingDetails, warranty).
  4. Make sure robots.txt and your bot protection let AI search and user agents through.
  5. Keep the buying path usable without your assistant: add to cart in the initial HTML, guest checkout, clear field labels.
  6. Measure from outside, the way an agent sees your store, not only from inside your own tools.

What Specoria measures here

The free test reads your store from outside, without running scripts, and reports two lines that relate directly to on-site assistants (neither affects the score):

“Review and Q&A tools” notes known review and Q&A tools on the product page and warns that content they load by script, in an iframe or in a shadow DOM isn’t visible to agents that read HTML. “Product question coverage” checks whether the product page answers the questions expected for that type of product.

The agent simulator then sends AI agents through your store in a real browser and shows where they get stuck. They stop at checkout and never order.

What we don’t claim

  • We don’t say on-site assistants are bad or unnecessary. They solve a real problem for shoppers on your site.
  • We don’t claim that putting answers in your HTML improves rankings or sales by a given amount. We measure whether agents can read and use your store.
  • Specoria doesn’t provide an on-site assistant and doesn’t need write access to your store.

Questions

Should we remove our on-site assistant?

No. It serves shoppers already on your site. The point is that it doesn’t cover outside agents, so you need to check that separately.

Our assistant answers questions about sizes and returns. Isn’t that enough?

For shoppers using the widget, maybe. Outside agents don’t use your widget; they need the same answers on the product page and in structured data.

Does Specoria offer an on-site assistant?

No. Specoria measures and fixes how AI shopping agents from outside read your store.
