Getting a Shopify store ready for AI shopping agents
Where to make each fix on Shopify, check by check: robots.txt, product data (JSON-LD), return and shipping policies, guest checkout and search. You or your team apply the changes; Specoria only reads your public pages and then measures again.
Let AI agents in
If robots.txt or a firewall turns AI search bots away, they can’t read your pages, so your products are unlikely to show up in their answers.
Where on Shopify
Online Store › Themes › Edit code › robots.txt.liquid (if missing, Add a new template › robots). If you use Cloudflare or a bot-protection app, allow agent identities there; the sitemap is published automatically at /sitemap.xml.
Checks
- Search and user agents allowed (robots.txt)
- Is bot protection open to agents?
- Sitemap
- Can the product page be indexed?
Agents to allow in robots.txt
AI search bots: OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Googlebot, Bingbot, Applebot. Agents fetching for a user: ChatGPT-User, Claude-User, Perplexity-User, Google-Agent.
A block on OAI-SearchBot and Googlebot is a critical blocker in our score. robots.txt controls crawling, not listing: a blocked page can still show up as a bare link (for example when other sites link to it), but the bot can’t read it, so your prices, stock and product details stay out of that surface’s index and answers.
If you give these agents their own group, repeat the Disallow lines from your “User-agent: *” group in it: a bot with its own group ignores the * group.
Product facts in the first HTML
Many agents read the page without running JavaScript. Name, price and stock must be in the HTML the server sends.
Where on Shopify
Move sections that render product name, price and stock only through JavaScript apps into the theme’s Liquid sections; they must appear in the server HTML.
Checks
Product data (JSON-LD)
Structured Product and Offer data is how an agent reads price, currency, stock and identity without guessing.
Where on Shopify
Add the missing fields to the JSON-LD in Edit code › sections/main-product (or your theme’s product template); fill in products’ Barcode field for GTIN.
Checks
Returns and shipping, machine-readable
Agents compare stores on delivery time and return terms; a business JSON-LD block states them in a form they can parse.
Where on Shopify
Add the business JSON-LD block (OnlineStore, returns and shipping) before </head> in Edit code › layout/theme.liquid.
Checks
Policy pages people and agents can read
Returns, shipping, legal and order-tracking pages, linked from every page, answer the questions shoppers ask assistants.
Where on Shopify
Settings › Policies (returns, shipping, terms) and Online Store › Pages; link the policies in the footer.
Checks
One price, one stock
When the page, the structured data and your feeds disagree, an agent can’t trust any of them.
Where on Shopify
The channel that serves the feed (e.g. Google & YouTube) and the product page must use the same price and stock fields; check the currency in Markets settings.
Checks
Cart and guest checkout
An agent can’t create an account or sign in for its user. A required login is where its journey ends.
Where on Shopify
Settings › Checkout › Customer accounts: allow guest checkout (don’t require an account).
Checks
Search by address
If search works from an address such as /search?q=, an agent can look through your catalog without clicking.
Where on Shopify
Shopify search works at /search?q=; don’t hide the theme’s search box.

Check the result
- Run the free test again after each change: it measures the same 27 checks and shows what moved.
- Watch two AI agents shop your store in a real browser with the simulator; it stops at checkout and never orders.
