Category score: definition and formula

The same formula inside one of the five categories: access, product data, policies and trust, consistency, action.

Definition

A category with nothing measured shows no number.

Formula

category score = round(100 × Σ (weight × credit) ÷ Σ weight) over the category’s measured checks

The five categories and their checks

How to read it

Each category score is the weighted share of that category’s measured checks, from 0 to 100. Categories carry different total weights (see the list above), so the overall score is not their plain average: a category with more measured weight moves it more.

Category scores are not capped. A store with a critical blocker can show a high category score next to an overall score held at 45 or lower; that gap is the cap at work (Critical blocker).

On hotel and service sites, the sector checks sit in the same five categories, and store-only checks leave them as not applicable.

What it does not tell you

  • Much, when few checks were measured: a category with one measured check rests on that one result. Look at how many of its checks we could measure.
  • Zero: a category with nothing measured shows no number, which is not the same as a score of 0.
  • How much an assistant cares about a category: the weights are ours, published in the method.

What moves it

  • Fixing the failed or partly passed checks of that category; the heavier the check, the more it moves the category.
  • Getting more of its checks measured. In the action category, guest checkout is never measured in the free test, so that category rests on its other checks.
  • The Priority order order ranks fixes across all five categories.
